![]() I treat any non-surgical musculoskeletal condition. What are common conditions you treat? Is there anything patients can do to avoid developing these conditions? In addition the field is evolving so rapidly I enjoy evaluating and offering concussion patients cutting edge treatment that has recently been instituted. As for concussions it is part of our training in primary care sports medicine. As a result of this I have got additional training in acupuncture and prolotherapy/PRP so that I could offer my patients less conventional treatment options. One of the most frustrating aspects of medicine for me is not getting people better. I have always been interested in complementary ways of treating injuries that are not responsive to conventional medicine. ![]() So when the opportunity to do a fellowship in sports medicine presented itself I jumped on it. ![]() As a family physician I always enjoyed caring for athletes. I always had an interest in sports medicine but decided to do family medicine as I did not enjoy surgery. When did you decide to specialize in sports medicine? I then shadowed a podiatrist and really enjoyed watching him evaluate and treat patients. Through injuries I had during my career as a competitive runner I became interested in the different aspects of sports medicine. How did you become interested in medicine? Krafczyk enjoys quality time with his family, traveling, woodworking, and of course, sports. He has published many articles, presented on numerous occasions, and has been honored for his expertise and teaching. Krafczyk also has professional interests in medical conditions in sports, such as concussions and exercise-induced asthma. Krafczyk enjoys helping patients return to their sport or activity of choice and has a keen interest in treating endurance athletes. Krafczyk has the distinction of being an affiliate of Bluetail Medical Group – a nationally renowned leader in the practice and advancement of orthopaedic orthobiologic medicine.ĭr. Krafczyk is one of the few physicians in the Lehigh Valley that offers Orthobiologic treatment options including platelet rich plasma (PRP) therapy and stem cell therapy. Krafczyk learned the value of sports medicine at a young age.ĭr. As a member of their hall of fame for having finished third at states in cross country, Dr. Michael Krafczyk was a local student athlete at Southern Lehigh where he participated in track and cross country. Part II covers current techniques used in in vitro culture and applications of germline stem cells.A native of the Lehigh Valley, Dr. Part I covers germline stem cell identification and regulation in model organisms. ![]() The protocols in Germline Stem Cells are intended to present selected genetic, molecular, and cellular techniques used in germline stem cell research. To isolate, characterize, and maintain stem cells, we must first understand the molecular parameters that define a germline stem cell and the mechanisms that regulate stem cell behavior. To make use of this potential, we have to learn how to isolate, characterize, and maintain germline stem cells. The knowledge gained from studying germline stem cells may find immediate application in preserving endangered wildlife, managing commercial livestock, overcoming fertility problems in humans, and treating testicular and ovary tumors. Germline stem cells are the source of human and animal reproduction. Stem cells have immense potential for therapeutic use in regenerative medicine and for developing anticancer therapies that specifically eliminate cancer stem cells. Tumors may originate from a few transformed cancer stem cells. Through asymmetric cell division, a stem cell in adult tissues can produce an offspring that will maintain the stem cell populations and a daughter cell that will differentiate into various short-lived cell types to replace damaged or dying cells. They possess unlimited self-renewal potency. Stem cells are responsible for maintaining tissue homeostasis.
